A constitution is a set of laws that a set of people have made and agreed upon for government—often codified as a written document—that enumerates and limits the powers and functions of a political entity. These rules together make up, i.e. constitute, what the entity is. In the case of countries and autonomous regions of federal countries the term refers specifically to a constitution defining the fundamental political principles, and establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties, of a government. By limiting the government's own reach, most constitutions guarantee certain rights to the people. The term constitution can be applied to any overall system of law that defines the functioning of a government, including several uncodified historical constitutions that existed before the development of modern codified constitutions.

Constitutions concern different levels of political organization. They exist at national (e.g., codified Indian Constitution, uncodified Constitution of the United Kingdom), regional (e.g., the Massachusetts Constitution), and sometimes lower levels. They also define many political and other groups, such as political parties, pressure groups, and trade unions. A supranational constitution is possible (e.g., proposed European Union constitution) but not always probable, depending on the structure of government to be laid out. The traditional absolute sovereignty of modern nations assumed in a constitution is often limited by binding international treaties such as the American Convention on Human Rights which binds the 24 American countries that have ratified it, and the European Convention on Human Rights which binds the 47 member countries of the Council of Europe.

Non-political entities such as corporations and voluntary associations, whether incorporated or not, often have what is effectively a constitution, often called memorandum and articles of association (U.S. incorporation).

The Constitution of India is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world, containing 395 articles, 12 schedules and 94 amendments, with 117,369 words in its English language version, while the United States Constitution is the shortest written constitution.

A. This is what scares me about this crop of candidates. They are all screaming change. Make change, I made change, change is on the march. The only one of them that states what he would change isn't taken seriously. ( Paul) What change do we need? Perhaps a return to conservatism and common sense. Like it was before Clinton became our worst embarrassment as president since Jimmy Carter. There is nothing wrong with our constitution and I wish people would leave it alone. Look at the world. It is still the best Declaration of Freedom ever written. Should we dis panel the house and senate? Hell no. The only change Dems ever want is higher taxes. The only change Rebs want is less government. Are these people ever going to discuss real… [cont.]

What's the difference between the Republican Party and the Constitutional Party?
Q. If you think about it and their respective platforms, the Constitutional Party has many of the same positions on certain issues (abortion, LGBT rights, prayer in schools, etc.) as the Republican Party. So, what is the difference then between the two?

A. The Constitution Party is more paleo-conservative than the Republicans, who are dominated by neo-cons. However, the Christianity that is in the constitution party is, ironically, unconstitutional.

2 constitutional pvosions that the framers devised to guard against the problems that Madison is addressing?
Q. Alright, so James Madison wrote these papers, and on the 51st he talks of how society has different views from each other and how the republic needs to guard society against it's rulers and it's other part. If I answered for the question: 2 constitutional pvosions that the framers devised to guard against the problems that Madison is addressing? Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances, would that be correct. I almost think it is, but I'm not sure. Any input please?

A. Congress, to not allow Executive over reach. Legislative and Judicial, to assure that this did not occur. System of checks and balances occurs only if the three tiered system of Government is in check ergo it's in balance. Didn't stop King George, did it?
