Politics is a process by which groups of people make decisions. The term is generally applied to behaviour within civil governments, but politics has been observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions. It consists of "social relations involving authority or power" and refers to the regulation of a political unit, and to the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy.

"Politics" ultimately comes from the Greek word "polis" meaning state or city. "Politikos" describes anything concerning the state or city affairs. In Latin, this was "politicus" and in French "politique". Thus it became "politics" in Middle English ( see the Concise Oxford Dictionary).

There is no academic consensus on the exact definition of "Politics", and what counts as political and what does not. Max Weber defined politics as the struggle for power.

As an academic discipline

Political science, the study of politics, examines the acquisition and application of power. Related areas of study include political philosophy, which seeks a rationale for politics and an ethic of public behaviour, political economy, which attempts to develop understandings of the relationships between politics and the economy and the governance of the two, and public administration, which examines the practices of governance.

Q. I am looking for a current political issues regarding welfare for my research project. I was wondering if you know any current problems or can give me some ideas on the issues of welfare that i might be able to research on. A. don't know of any links but here is an idea: welfare rec. get punished for going to work.. When I was working I would make $2.00 more in raise and food stamps went down $5 and sect. 8 rent goes up $5.. that's already $8.00 in the hole.. They want to get people to be self sufficient but they make that impossible...You could also research how many people actually do NEED welfare that are working full time.. by the time a person makes even $10 a hour, pays daycare, rent, etc.. there is nothing left. Everyone says that welfare rec. are lazy and don't want to work.. I worked from the time my son was 3 weeks old and there is no way I could have lived without sect. 8, food stamps, medical care.. My medicine was $1200 a month, daycare was $300 a… [cont.]

What is the difference between social and political?
Q. for example, would war fall under social or political? corrupt leaders would fall under political, correct? social class is obviously social. can anybody give me some other examples? oh and is church/religion social?
Asked by antioxidant - Tue Nov 18 21:01:11 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is really no exact definition that all categories would fall under. Generally social refers to the way ordinary people live their lives. Social includes, entertainment, clothing, fads, fashions, civil rights, trends, patterns, and demographics. Political refers to the decisions our elected officials make on any number of topics. Religion included. Generally discussing religion refers to social issues more than political issues however. Corrupt leaders would fall under political in most instances.
